01Working together
Who do you work with?
We support boat builders, yacht brokers, yacht dealers, shipyards, yacht-management companies, charter companies and other businesses responsible for moving yachts or delivering a client experience.
What commercial services do you offer?
We offer three commercial service pathways: Managed Yacht Delivery, Yacht Shipping Coordination and New Build Yacht Handover.
They cover movement under the yacht’s own hull, a coordinated carrier solution, or structured support through commissioning, owner acceptance and first use.
What yachts can you handle?
We coordinate the delivery and logistics of sailing yachts and motor yachts—including monohulls, sailing catamarans and power catamarans—up to 35 metres (approximately 115 feet). Every project is qualified against the yacht’s condition, range, route, season, insurance requirements and the availability of an appropriately experienced captain and crew.
Can you work under our brand or behind the scenes?
Yes, where commercially appropriate. We can operate as a clearly identified delivery partner, coordinate directly with the client, or work discreetly behind your team. The reporting, authority and client-facing arrangement should be agreed before the project begins.
How do you protect our client relationship?
We agree the communication structure before mobilisation, identify who may approve changes or additional costs, provide reporting in the agreed format, and keep the relevant stakeholders informed without creating unnecessary noise. The goal is a smooth client experience and a properly documented outcome.
What does a company-managed delivery add to a captain appointment?
North Star takes responsibility for coordinating the agreed operation around the captain: verified selection, readiness planning, weather and logistical support, defined reporting, asset-care requirements and documented handover. Your team has a clear escalation contact and an operating structure that can be applied across individual yachts or a programme of work.
02Planning & commercial terms
What information do you need for a commercial quote?
Start with the yacht’s make, model, year, dimensions, current location, final destination and timing. Include the readiness status, preferred movement method and any buyer, yard or charter commitments.
For shipping enquiries, accurate transport dimensions, weight, loading constraints and the yacht’s ability to move under its own power are especially useful. We request further technical details as the carrier options develop.
How do you quote commercial work?
We assess the yacht, origin, destination, intended movement method, timing, readiness, crew requirement, shipping interfaces and reporting expectations. The proposal then separates North Star Marine’s coordination fees from captain, crew, travel and third-party costs as appropriate.
Do you offer fixed fees, commissions or trade terms?
Commercial terms are agreed for the assignment or programme. The proposal should make clear the coordination fee, captain and attendance costs, third-party charges and any agreed referral or partner arrangement.
We do not publish a standard discount or promise a referral payment. Recurring work can be discussed once the scope, expected volume and responsibilities are understood.
Who pays for carrier charges and other third-party costs?
The commercial proposal will state who contracts and pays each cost. Carrier charges, lifting, cradling, port services, fuel, provisioning, travel, accommodation, repairs, customs, agents, taxes and marina charges are not assumed to be included in North Star Marine’s fee unless expressly stated.
Who can approve repairs, diversions or extra costs?
The brief should identify one authorised decision-maker and a backup, together with any agreed spending limits and escalation arrangements. We keep the appropriate stakeholders informed when the programme or budget changes.
The captain retains onboard authority to make decisions required for safety. The written agreement defines how urgent expenditure is handled.
03Own-hull delivery
What does own-hull delivery management include?
We coordinate the delivery captain and crew, readiness and departure planning, passage operations, weather and tracking oversight, stakeholder reporting, arrival logistics, condition notes and handover. Protection and care of the asset form part of the delivery standard rather than a separate service.
How are delivery captains selected?
North Star checks qualifications, references, passage records and relevant yacht experience, drawing on captains known through our professional network. We match the appointment to the vessel, route, season, systems and wider crew. The captain receives an agreed operating brief and reports to our shore team throughout the managed delivery.
Can Managed Yacht Delivery begin at a shipyard?
Yes, subject to the yacht being ready and the agreed scope. We can coordinate yard handover, preparation, documentation, protection, captain and crew mobilisation, passage operations and delivery to the requested destination.
How are new-build finishes and inventory protected?
We record collection condition and inventory matters, coordinate suitable protection with the yard or representative, and protect vulnerable finishes, furnishings and high-use areas while preserving access to systems. Captains keep machinery and maintenance logs and plan servicing against the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.
Arrival records capture condition, service work, defects and outstanding items. This supports a clear customer handover; normal passage wear and manufacturer warranty conditions still apply.
Can you manage multiple deliveries at the same time?
Yes. Our captain network and shoreside operation support concurrent assignments. We confirm suitable personnel, shore capacity, yacht readiness, route and timing for each project, with a distinct operating brief and reporting arrangements for every vessel.
Can you support recurring fleet or builder programmes?
Yes, we can discuss a series of movements with common reporting, handover and commercial requirements. Advance schedules help us plan captain availability and mobilisation.
Each yacht still requires its own readiness review and acceptance. Capacity and dates are confirmed for the specific assignments rather than assumed from the size of the wider network.
How do you manage machinery servicing and warranty-sensitive work?
Captains record engine and generator hours and service work against the applicable manufacturer schedules, including early-life requirements. Routine work is carried out within competence and manufacturer requirements; specialist or authorised service attendance is coordinated where needed. Warranty decisions remain with the manufacturer, and records are available for the partner’s handover file.
How do you reduce avoidable wear during delivery?
Our standard combines appropriate interior protection with conservative sail handling, machinery-hour monitoring, maintenance and clear defect reporting. We avoid unnecessary machinery use where practical while accounting for safety and operational needs. Departure and arrival condition records provide continuity between the yard, delivery team and receiving representative.
How are route security and piracy exposure assessed?
Security information, piracy exposure and port access form part of passage assessment and ongoing decisions. We consider alternative routes, timing or shipping where appropriate and avoid identified high-risk areas where practicable. Material changes are reported through the agreed stakeholder channel.
04Shipping & onward delivery
Are you the shipping carrier?
No. North Star Marine coordinates the shipping solution and supervises the yacht’s movement at the relevant stages. The selected carrier remains responsible for the contracted ocean transport and its carrier obligations.
What does shipping coordination include?
We help define the transport requirement, obtain or coordinate suitable carrier options, align port and yacht requirements, supervise loading where agreed, coordinate discharge, and arrange onward delivery under the yacht’s own hull to the final marina.
Can you quote for both delivery and shipping?
Yes. When both methods are feasible, we can help compare the likely scope, programme and practical requirements. The comparison should account for mobilisation, fuel and port costs for a delivery, and carrier, handling and onward movement costs for shipping.
A shipping quotation remains subject to carrier acceptance, space, vessel details and the relevant booking terms.
Who supervises loading and discharge?
Where included in the agreed scope, we arrange a suitable captain or representative to attend, coordinate the yacht’s movement and record condition. The carrier, terminal and appointed lifting specialists control their own operations.
Attendance does not replace a carrier’s lifting plan, an independent survey where required, or the responsibilities of the specialist contractors.
Does the same captain attend at both ends?
That can be arranged when practical, but it is not always the best use of time or travel costs. We may appoint suitable representatives at each port with a documented handover between them. The attendance plan and onward delivery requirements are agreed in the proposal.
Can you handle onward delivery to the final marina?
Yes, subject to the yacht’s readiness, the passage and the agreed scope. We can coordinate receipt after discharge, any required recommissioning, a suitable captain and movement to the receiving marina.
This final leg is part of the shipping assignment and is scoped separately from the carrier’s port-to-port voyage.
What if a carrier changes its sailing date or port?
We review the effect on yacht preparation, attendance, berthing, travel and onward delivery, then coordinate a revised plan with the authorised representative. Carrier schedules and space are subject to their terms.
Waiting time, storage, rebooking and additional attendance can create costs; these should be addressed in the proposal and relevant carrier booking.
05New build handover
What does New Build Yacht Handover include for a commercial partner?
The appointment can connect the builder, dealer, yard, buyer and technical specialists through launch, commissioning review, sea-trial attendance, documented outstanding items, builder follow-up and preparation for an informed owner acceptance decision. The scope is agreed around the commercial milestone and the client-facing arrangement.
Can you represent the builder, dealer or owner?
Yes, provided the appointing party, authority, reporting line and any conflicts are clear. We can operate client-facing or behind the commercial partner’s team. We do not make warranty, technical-acceptance or financial commitments without explicit authority.
How are commissioning issues and snagging recorded?
We agree a practical reporting format, responsible contacts and escalation process. Observations can be recorded with descriptions, photographs, status and the party responsible for follow-up. A coordination record supports the handover process; it is not an independent condition survey or engineering report.
Do you replace the surveyor, engineer or warranty team?
No. Survey findings, specialist testing, statutory certification, engineering approval and warranty decisions remain with the appropriately appointed parties. North Star coordinates the agreed interfaces, attends the relevant milestones and keeps the authorised stakeholders informed.
Can you provide owner familiarisation or a mentored first passage?
Yes, as optional, separately scoped and priced additions. Yacht-specific systems orientation, docking, close-quarters handling or a mentored first passage can be arranged where requested. The proposal distinguishes practical familiarisation from accredited instruction and defines who is in command during any passage.
06Reporting & responsibilities
Can our business and client access the project portal?
We agree the required project contacts with you and invite the authorised representatives. Access is assigned to individual projects, with shared records limited to the relevant audience or named recipient. This provides a coordinated view of the assignment without exposing North Star’s internal costing or private team notes.
How do the captain, shore team and client stay coordinated?
Captains submit passage reports, machinery and maintenance records, photographs and expenses to operations. The shore team reviews submissions, publishes relevant updates and coordinates outstanding actions. Your appointed contacts see the shared information and decisions relevant to their project, rather than an unfiltered stream of internal reports.
Can we share satellite tracking with the yacht owner?
For an equipped own-hull passage, the assigned satellite tracking link can be made available through the project portal. It opens the tracking provider’s page directly; reporting intervals and connectivity determine when positions update. Sharing permissions and the appropriate voyage view are checked as part of project setup. Carrier movements use the updates and tracking arrangements available from the shipping provider.
How are expenses and additional-work decisions recorded?
Operations reviews expense submissions and receipts before publishing them to the client ledger. Additional-work requests record the stated scope, amount and decision. We agree the authorised decision-makers with you before work begins; a portal approval records authorisation, not payment.
Can we retrieve documents and handover records for our files?
Yes. Authorised project contacts can download the shared documents and a PDF project record. This can include condition information, reviewed expenditure, recorded changes and arrival or handover reports. The export lists documents; the underlying attachments are downloaded separately.
Are project notifications available by email?
Email notifications can direct authorised recipients to newly shared information in the private workspace. Availability and recipients are confirmed during project setup. The project record remains the reference point, supported by the agreed direct contact and escalation arrangements.
What reporting can a partner expect?
Partners receive agreed mobilisation and readiness updates, tracking access for authorised recipients, passage progress, significant weather or routing decisions and technical situation reports. Captains submit machinery hours, maintenance, defects, photographs and expenditure to North Star; we provide relevant records and a documented arrival handover to the agreed stakeholders.
What happens if a yacht is not ready or the schedule changes?
We report readiness concerns and material changes promptly. A project may require additional work, a revised departure, a different route, a shipping alternative or a changed scope. Any cost or responsibility change should be approved by the authorised representative before it is incurred where reasonably practicable.
Can you coordinate customs, ports and marinas?
We can coordinate practical communication with marinas, ports, agents and other service providers within the agreed scope. Customs, VAT, import, export, flag and local regulatory matters may require specialist agents or advisers and remain subject to the relevant authorities.
Can you share credentials and relevant references?
Yes. We can discuss experience relevant to the vessel and route, provide appropriate captain credentials during selection and share references or records with the necessary permission.
Our team and captain network collectively bring more than one million nautical miles and over 100 years of professional maritime experience. These are combined career figures, including work before North Star, rather than company delivery totals.
How are damage, defects or discrepancies recorded?
We agree the required departure and arrival records, including photographs or inventory notes where appropriate. Material defects, damage or discrepancies are reported to the authorised contacts and recorded for follow-up.
Independent condition surveys or loading surveys can be scoped separately where needed. Responsibilities and any claims procedure depend on the contracts and insurance applicable to the movement.
Who oversees the delivery team during the passage?
Our shore operation receives the captain’s logs and reports, reviews progress and weather, coordinates port and technical support and follows up on defects or changes. This supports the captain’s command while giving the commercial client an accountable company contact throughout.
What happens when a major technical problem interrupts the programme?
The captain addresses immediate safety. North Star provides a situation report to authorised contacts as communications permit, assists with suitable diversion options, liaises with manufacturers or contractors and seeks timely competitive repair quotations where practical. We coordinate approval and revised arrival plans under the agreed authority.
What records support the final client handover?
Collection and arrival condition photographs, engine and generator hours, maintenance and servicing, defect status, expense records and outstanding actions are brought together for the agreed recipients. This helps the next custodian understand the yacht’s condition and follow-up needs.
